Why we always start with an audit, even for referral clients

It would be easy to skip straight to content or link building for a warm referral. We don't, and here's the actual reason.

It's tempting to think an audit is just a formality before the "real work" starts. In practice, it's usually where we find the one or two issues that would have quietly capped every other effort if left unaddressed.

What an audit actually catches

  • Pages that are accidentally blocked from indexing — this alone can make months of content work invisible to Google
  • Duplicate content across URL variations that splits ranking signals instead of consolidating them
  • A slow-loading or unstable mobile experience that's suppressing rankings regardless of content quality
  • Existing content that's already ranking, but for the wrong intent — sometimes editing beats writing something new
  • Gaps between what a business actually offers and what its current content describes

Why this matters even for a referral

A referral usually comes with an assumption that "the basics are probably fine." That assumption is often wrong — sites that look polished on the surface frequently have structural issues underneath that a casual look wouldn't reveal. Starting content or link-building work on top of an unaddressed technical issue means redoing that work later, once the audit findings surface anyway.

The alternative costs more, later

Skipping the audit doesn't save time — it just delays finding out what needs fixing until after work has already been built on a shaky foundation. Every engagement starts here for that reason, without exception.
